A combination of snow and rain shut off access to Zermatt, near the Matterhorn.
Snowy weather and an avalanche risk stranded some 13,000 tourists in a Swiss resort town at the base of the Matterhorn, according to The Associated Press.
Until late Wednesday afternoon, helicopter was the only way out.
Police and the operators of the famed Zermatt ski resort decided to close roads leading into and out of the region and canceled all train services in and out.
Tourists had to be airlifted from Zermatt, a ski resort that was cut off because of heavy snow and blocked rail tracks.
