Stocks inch up, putting S&P 500 on track for its first gain in 5 days

U.S. stocks perked up in Thursday morning trading, and the Standard & Poor's 500 index was on track for its first gain in five days.

The losses overshadowed gains for technology companies and other areas of the market.

U.S. stocks took another small step backward on Wednesday after a plunge in the price of oil dragged down shares of energy producers.

Crude oil inched higher following a plunge Wednesday, and Asian stocks recovered some of their sharp losses from the day before.
